The Past Simple Tense
The past simple is used to talk about finished events that we know the time for. Remember when you graduated Kindergarten? Is it in the past? YES! Do we know the date of when you graduated? YES! So we can say like this:
I graduated Kindergarten in 1986. The verb is graduate （卒業）. It happened in 1986 (The time).
When you read, do you sometimes hear the story like this:
We went to the forest, and saw a large cat. The cat drank water. Suddenly the dog howled! Can you see the verbs? All of them are in the past simple tense: Go = went, see = saw, drink = drank, howl (吠える)= howled.
Remember we spoke about current habits and routines in simple present? If we used to do something, we use the past simple. For example:
simple present: I go to the movies every week
past simple: I went to the movies every day when I was a child.
Do you remember in the simple present the verb changed depending on the person? For example: I run, you run, we run, they run, and he runs, she runs and it runs. In simple past, it is very simple! We only need to know how to write the past tense of the word! For example:
I ran, she ran, they ran, it ran, you ran, we ran! simple isn`t it?
